This ‘highly wrought meditation on ageing, memory and regret’ is an adaptation of a novel by Julian Barnes which won the Man Booker prize. Jim Broadbent plays Tony Webster, a man in his seventies living a quiet life until a letter arrives that forces him to confront events from half a century earlier. Flashbacks using younger actors relate his intense friendship with a fellow college student and attraction to an elusive young woman. The film depicts the way in which rash youthful decisions can change the course of one’s life and have consequences decades later, as well as the way in which we selectively self-edit memories. As he proceeds to uncover truths long denied, Webster again meets the girl he courted, played as an older woman by Charlotte Rampling.
