Force Majeure is a cinematic gem expertly crafted. All aspects of filmmaking – cinematography, music, editing, screenplay, acting and directing – are impeccable and balanced to create a film that is beautiful to look at with close to painterly images and always absorbing. A “normal” Swedish family, Ebba and Tomas and their two children, are on a five day ski holiday in the magnificently rendered European Alps. Everything is quite normal, although there is a bit of modern day tension – too much talking on the cell phone – when an extraordinary event occurs that gradually calls into question notions of masculinity, heroism, and the security within a family. Force Majeure is at times thrilling and other times very funny. The acting is naturalistic and the reviews have been unanimously positive. Directed by Ruben Ostlund.
