Sweden – Drama – 110 minutes
Set in Sweden in the 1930s, Sámi Blood deals with the systematic removal of indigenous Sámi children from their parents. Elle Marja, a reindeer-herder Sámi girl, is forcibly removed from her family and sent to a state boarding school that teaches the Swedish culture whilst stressing that her Sámi culture is wrong. While there, she excels with her fierce intelligence, and meets a student from Uppsala. She faces a difficult decision: remain with her people, or reject her culture, become Swedish, and start a new life. This coming-of-age tale shows the impact of prejudice when one culture seeks to deny another, told with an emotional power that resonates universally.
