Testament of Youth is a powerful story of love, war and remembrance based on the First World war memoir by Vera Brittain, which has become the classic testimony of that war from a woman’s point of view. To the consternation of her father Vera wants to go to Oxford and vows that she will never get married. Her dream is to become a writer. Then the First World War starts and she leaves university to become a nurse on the front line. A vigorous and forward-thinking woman she surrenders her literary ambitions to support the victims of war. The memoir tells of her journey from youthful hopes and dreams to the edge of despair and back again. It’s a film about young love, the futility of war and how to make sense of the darkest times.
