Director Amma Asante’s follow-up to the acclaimed Belle, is based on extraordinary true events. In 1947, in London studying law, Prince Seretse Khama, of Bechuanaland (now Botswana), fell in love with a typist. Their proposed marriage was challenged, and not only by their families. The Botswanan people didn’t want a white queen. The South African government disliked the notion of a biracial couple ruling a neighbouring country. The British government was terrified that South Africa would retaliate by leaving the Commonwealth and depriving Britain of its strategic minerals. Following the couple’s almost decade-long fight for love and country, through exile and continent-spanning turmoil, the film hits all the emotional notes and political intrigue of a solid historical drama.
