Movies today involve big bucks. Avatar was the most expensive to make, so far, at $US425 million. But it grossed $2.78 billion world-wide, more than any other film, and turned out to be the most profitable. The list of expensive, high-earning and profitable films is dominated by superheroes and Harry Potter.
Some very low-budget films have made a lot of money. David Lynch made Eraserhead, really a student exercise, for $100,000; it has earned $7 million. Super Size Me cost $65,000 to make but pulled in over $22 million.
As for losses, Happy Feet Two ended up $64 million in the red. Someone thought it worth spending over $170 million to make Mars Needs Moms. Unsurprisingly, it lost $26 million.
